history

In 1960, Deutsche Petfood GmbH (German subsidiary of Mars Inc.) opened its first factory in Verden an der Aller ( Lower Saxony ). Pet food (Chappi, Kitekat, Trill) was produced for the German and later also continental European markets. The aim was to establish the ready-made food in cans and trays , which was already successful in England , as well as dry food in Germany. In the mid-sixties the company was renamed Effem GmbH. The name is composed of the initials of the owner Forrest Mars - FM -, but is pronounced "Effem". In 1982 Effem GmbH opened its second location in Minden (Westphalia).

Mars Inc.'s confectionery products have also been sold on the German market since 1961. In order to meet the growing demand in Germany, the company built a confectionery factory in Viersen ( Mackenstein ) in North Rhine-Westphalia , which went into operation in 1979. It operates under the name Mars GmbH Germany.

In 1986 Mars bought the ice cream manufacturer Dove and also set up a new business area for Germany - chocolate bars as ice cream. In the meantime, the ice cream varieties from Mars, Twix and Snickers are established in Germany as bar and stick ice cream, but also in cups.

In 1990 Effem GmbH expanded its range to include the Seramis plant care system and Mars Plantcare. A newly built factory was opened in 1990 in Mogendorf ( Westerwald ) for production .

In 2001 Mars Inc. merged the German subsidiaries (Mars GmbH and Effem GmbH) under the name Masterfoods . They have been operating under the surname Mars since 2007 - today as the daughters: Mars Chocolate Germany (confectionery, ice cream), Mars Petcare Germany (pet food and care), Mars Food Germany (food), Mars Plantcare Germany (plant care ) and Mars Drinks Germany (Beverages and systems).

Since the takeover of Wrigley by Mars Inc. in 2008, the German branch of the chewing gum manufacturer in Unterhaching has also belonged to Mars Germany as an independent subsidiary.
