Mars is a chocolate bar manufactured by Mars Incorporated . It consists of “candy cream” with a layer of caramel on top , surrounded by milk chocolate .

Product range and marketing

The Mars bar was developed in 1932 by Forrest Mars , the son of the company's founder Frank C. Mars , based on the US Milky Way from 1923 - the European Milky Way corresponds to the American 3 Musketeers . The product was first sold in Germany in 1961. The latch was invented in Slough .

In Sweden, Marabou has been selling the Japp chocolate bar since 1947 , which is similar in appearance and packaging to the Mars bar.

Typically, each package contains one bar. One bar weighs 51 g, Mars-Mini consists of two 20-gram bars and a Mars Kingsize weighs 80 g. Recently, other sizes have also appeared, for example single bars with 51 g and at discounters packs of 7 (6 + 1) bars of 45 g. In addition to the classic Mars in different sizes, there are also Mars ice cream bars or Mars Planets (small chocolate balls in different flavors). Mars is also available in different flavors (for example Mars Midnight with dark chocolate coating, Mars Almond with roasted almond pieces (no longer available since February 2013) and Mars delight with crispy biscuit and caramel).

In Germany, around four billion euros were turned over in 2004 with the sale of chocolate products, around 24% of which was accounted for by chocolate bars. Of these, Mars is one of the best-selling in Europe.

There are recipes with Mars bars on the Internet, such as the Mars pear cake. Fried Mars bars are sold in Scotland .

Recall campaign 2016

The largest recall of Mars chocolate bars to date began on February 23, 2016. A customer in Germany had discovered a sharp-edged plastic part in a Mars bar that had been manufactured in the factory in Veghel in the Netherlands . The manufacturing company then decided to launch a major recall. Various chocolate products made in Veghel (mainly Mars bars, but also Snickers in the Netherlands and Milky Way in the UK) have been recalled. The reason for the recall was that small children could possibly suffocate if they swallow any other similar plastic parts. 55 countries were affected by the recall.

Advertising concepts and reception

Mars' first German advertising motto was “Mars tastes three times delicious”, which referred to the three clearly distinguishable individual components of the chocolate bar. The lettering in the logo is also kept in three specific colors, which are intended to symbolize the components of the product and their arrangement from the inside out. The idea of special enjoyment created with the advertising slogan was retained as an advertising line at a later date. Slogans like “And you taste the lust for life” (2003) are aimed at the moment of pleasure.

100 g Mars contains approx. 16.6 g fat , 61.7 g sugar and 449  kilocalories (as of 2017) - so they provide the body with about ten times as much energy as 100 g apple . This fact was introduced as a second line in product advertising and has since been pursued with the concept of “energy” and “energy donor”.

An advertising slogan in the 1960s was: "Mars brings used energy back immediately." The concept was continued in the 1970s with the motto "Mars makes you mobile - at work, sport and play!" After a break, Mars started using the slogan "Take Mars - step on the gas!"

The first slogan was in circles of anti-nuclear activists satirized . The name of the product and the term energy have been reinterpreted in a playful way in keeping with the motto “No nuclear waste on Mars, because Mars brings used energy back immediately!” .

Before and during the European Football Championship in 2008 , Mars was sold as "Hopp" in Switzerland. This was based on the battle cry of Swiss football fans “Hopp, Schwiiz”. Analogous to this, the packaging in Austria at that time had the imprint “Bite in, lads!”.
