Maria Katharina Kasper (born May 26, 1820 in Dernbach (Westerwald) ; † February 2, 1898 there ) is a saint of the Catholic Church. She is the founder of the Congregation ( religious order ) of the poor servants of Jesus Christ , abbreviation : ADJC ; Colloquially known as the Dernbacher Sisters .

Maria Katharina Kasper was born on April 16, 1978 by Pope Paul VI. Beatified and canonized by Pope Francis in the Vatican in Rome on October 14, 2018 .

Life

Katharina Kasper was born as the daughter of a farmer in the Westerwald . It was from the father's second marriage. He married a second time after the death of his first wife, also to have the four children from his first marriage taken care of. This second marriage also had four children. Her father died on January 26th, 1842. Kasper worked as a day laborer after she had already helped her parents' farm and with her father's sideline as a forest worker. Even as a child she recognized her calling to help orphans , the poor and the sick. Around 1845, she and four other women from the village founded an association that was dedicated to the home care of the sick and the elderly as well as child care. In 1848, with the support of other residents, the association built its own house in which four members of the association lived.

In 1851, with the ecclesiastical approval by the Limburg bishop Peter Joseph Blum , the association became the cooperative of poor servants of Jesus Christ . Kasper and her four companions made their vows on August 15, 1851, the feast of the Assumption , in the parish church of St. Bonifatius in Wirges in front of the Bishop of Limburg. Kasper took the religious name Maria and became the first leader of the community. The community quickly gained considerable popularity and expanded its fields of work. In 1868 the first foreign branch was set up in the USA, others were set up in the Netherlands, England, Belgium, Bohemia and Luxembourg. In 1870 the community was recognized by the Vatican and Maria Katharina Kasper was appointed Superior General, in 1890 the poor servants of Jesus Christ received the final approval of their constitutions by Pope Leo XIII. In 1898, when Kasper died, the community numbered 1,725 ​​members in 193 branches.

Beatification and canonization process

On April 16, 1978 she was by Pope Paul VI. beatified . Her feast day in the liturgy is February 1st.

The former Limburg bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst , who applied for it in February 2012 , was particularly committed to the canonization , as did the former Limburg vicar general Franz Kaspar , who was related to Maria Katharina Kasper . On March 6, 2018, Pope Francis recognized a miracle attributed to her intercession . She is awarded the cure of an Indian congregation brother who is said to have been declared clinically dead in November 2011 after a traffic accident, but after the prayer of the congregation sisters with the invocation of the founder, he came to life and recovered. The canonization took place within the framework of the Synod of Bishops on the subject of "Young people, faith and vocational discernment" on October 14, 2018 in St. Peter's Square in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

With the initial issue date June 4, 2020 was the German Post AG to mark the 200th birthday of Catherine Kasper a special stamp in the denomination of 155 euro cents out. The design comes from the graphic artist Jens Müller from Düsseldorf.
