life and work

After training as a media designer, Jens Müller studied communication design from 2004 to 2011 (in the diploma course and then in the master's course) at the design department of the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences (today: Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences , Peter Behrens School of Arts). During his studies he and Karen Weiland won the competition for the design of the special postage stamp “125. Birthday Franz Kafka ”. Since then he has realized around a dozen special stamps on various topics for the Federal Ministry of Finance .

Together with 12 students, Jens Müller initiated the research project “FilmKunstGrafik” - an exhibition, book and film project on the new German film graphics of the 1960s. The topic of "design history" has accompanied him since his student days. The book series A5 conceived, designed and published by him is dedicated to personalities and topics of graphic design history. With volume A5 / 02: Philips-Twen - The leading realism, Müller brought a forgotten series of records back into the cultural memory of the Federal Republic of Germany. The volumes about the Kieler Woche , the Ulm School of Music and Lufthansa are already sought-after collector's items.

While he was still studying for a master's degree, Müller and his fellow student Weiland founded the design office “müller, weiland”. From 2011 to 2018 it led the design studio "optik - Kommunikation und Gestaltung". In 2016 he founded the publishing house "Optik Books". Since 2019, he and his partners Katharina Sussek and Andreas Magino have been running the “vista” studio for communication design based in Düsseldorf.

Jens Müller teaches as a lecturer and substitute professor at the Design Department at the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences and at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences . In addition to his work as a designer, he researches the history of international graphic design and is the author of specialist books, including "Logo Modernism". The American Wired Magazine described Müller as "a kind of logo detective". His books on national and international graphic design history made him a lecturer. His two-volume work “The History of Graphic Design”, which was last published by Taschen Verlag and documents the global design history since 1890 on almost 1,000 pages, was discussed in around 150 international media.

In 2018, Jens Müller was jury president at the international competition 100 Best Posters 2017. In 2013, he and Karen Weiland won first prize at the Kieler Woche design competition.

He lives and works in Düsseldorf .
