Fly540 (actually Five Forty Aviation Limited ) is a Kenyan low-cost airline based in Nairobi and based at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport .
history
Fly540 was founded on November 24, 2006 as the country's first low-cost airline. At that time she only flew between Mombasa and the capital Nairobi with an ATR 42 . It connected the capital with the tourist destinations on the east coast around Mombasa. From 2007, the company also carried out its first international flights to Tanzania . In the 2008 financial year (up to September 30th) 171,160 passengers were carried, which corresponds to an increase of 93% compared to 2007 (88,571 passengers). The largest shareholder in Fly540 is Lonrho Aviation (BVI) Limited with 49% . As of 2011, Fly540 had subsidiaries of the same name in Angola , Ghana and Tanzania, which carried out regional traffic in these countries. In the summer of 2012 it became known that Fly540 would be taken over by the newly founded Fastjet . The subsidiaries based in Angola, Ghana and Tanzania were sold to Fastjet from November 2012 . In early 2013, the owners of the Fly540 and the Fastjet got into a dispute over late payments of around 6.8 million US dollars. Due to the outstanding amount of money prohibited Fly540 of FastJet the continued use of their brand name. In addition, the Kenyan company and its base in Nairobi remained owned by the Fly540 group of companies.
