Sarafovo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sarafowo (also written Sarafovo , Bulgarian Сарафово ) is a district of the Bulgarian port city of Burgas with about 3000 inhabitants. The quarter is around 10 km from the city center, with only Lake Atanasov between the quarter and the city center . The area of Burgas Airport borders immediately to the west of Sarafovo . The bus line 5 of the city company Burgasbus runs regularly between the district, the airport and the city center.

Thanks to its location on the Black Sea in the Burgas Bay , Sarafovo has a higher average temperature, so the active tourist season in this region can last until the end of October. From Sarafovo the view extends over the bay of Burgas to Pomorie , Sozopol and the Strandschagebirge . Sarafovo is also known as the Beverly Hills of Burgas, as many wealthy citizens have settled here.

The district has a beach, a small harbor and a stadium of the same name. There is also the Church of St. Nicholas Chudotvorets and the nature reserve Atanasov Lake is nearby .

history

Sarafovo was built between 1921 and 1922, when the first accommodations were built by Bulgarian refugees from Eastern and Western Thrace (see Thracian Bulgarians ). During this time, Burgas was the largest refugee city. On August 28, 1922, Sarafowo was recognized as an independent place within the Pomorie district and was named in 1929 after the architect Sarafow, who planned the layout of the place with large avenues and many parks.

From November 12, 1987, the place was incorporated into the city of Burgas and received the status of a city district.

In February 2012, a Roman settlement came to light during a storm surge in the sea north of Sarafowo. This is to be uncovered and researched in the next few years. The first excavations in spring 2012 will be led by Ljudmil Wagalinski, director of the National Archaeological Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and financially supported by the Bulgarian government. An early Christian basilica was uncovered at the end of May.
