Banewo ( Bulgarian Банево , derived from Banja literally translated = bath ) is a district of Burgas in southeastern Bulgaria . The district is picturesquely located in the Ajtos mountain range , which is one of the southern forerunners of the Balkan Mountains , around 14.5 km from the city center and around 3 km from Wetren .

The mineral baths of Burgas, known since ancient times, are located near Banewo. In ancient times they were called Aquae Calidae . Legend has it that even Philip II was a guest here. The Gothic historian Jordanes wrote in the 6th century: " Very hot water rises from the spring, the first and best of all springs in the world for the healing of the sick ". In Byzantine times the settlement was called Thermopolis (from the Greek θερμός ( thermos ) = "warm" and πόλις ( polis ) = "city"). It is known that the Eastern Roman Emperor Tiberios I chose the city to heal his wife's illness.

In 1206 the city was plundered and destroyed by the Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade under Heinrich . The imperial scribe stated: “It was a very beautiful city, in a good location, with many hot springs - the best in the world. We took good prey from it ”. The springs were only built 350 years later, but were devastated by the Catalan Company in the 13th century . The later Ottoman Sultan Suleyman I ordered the construction of a large hammam , which is still in use today after several renovations.

Banewo was founded in 1920 by Bulgarian refugees from Eastern and Western Thrace (→ Thracian Bulgarians ) and Macedonia (→ Macedonian Bulgarians ) on the site of a Turkish " country house " (Çiftlik). In 1932 the first Ivan Vazov school was built. Next to her there is a Tschitalischte and the "Sweta Petka" chapel in the village .

Until 2009, the quarter was an independent municipality within the municipality of Burgas .
