Wetren ( Bulgarian Ветрен ) is a district of the city of Burgas . Wetren is located around 14.5 km from Burgas city center. The road from Burgas to Sofia runs through the district . After the construction of the Thrace Motorway , most of the traffic also shifted there.

In 2008 excavations near Wetren in the area "Solna Niwa" (German: Salt Acker) found more than 250 artefacts, the oldest of which are dated at least 6,000 years before Christ. The finds testify to a developed agriculture, livestock and salt production of the inhabitants of this area at that time. Also ritual items of a priest king were found.

The mineral baths of Burgas, which have been known since ancient times, are located near Wetren. In ancient times it and the nearby settlement were called Aquae Calidae . According to legend, even Philip II is said to have been a frequent guest here. The Gothic historian Jordanes wrote: " Very hot water rises from the spring, the first and best of all springs in the world for the healing of the sick ". In the following centuries the settlement grew into a city of Thermopolis (from Gr. Θερμός ( thermos ) = "warm" and πόλις ( polis ) = "city"). It is known that the Eastern Roman Emperor Tiberios I chose the city to heal his wife's illness.

In 1206 the city was plundered and destroyed by the Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade under Heinrich . The imperial scribe stated: “It was a very beautiful city, in a good location, with many hot springs - the best in the world. We took good booty with us ”. The springs were not built until 350 years later. The later Ottoman Sultan Suleyman I ordered the construction of a large hammam , which is still used today after several renovations.

The current quarter was founded in 1920 by resettlers from the village of Wetren near Pazardzhik and Bulgarian refugees from Eastern and Western Thrace ( Thracian Bulgarians ) and Macedonia . The first school was built in 1932.

During the communist period (1944-1989) the quarter was called Schitarowo (Bulgarian Житарово). Until 2009 the quarter was still an independent municipality within the municipality of Burgas .

The soccer club "FC Wetren" plays in the regional league.
