The Tivat Airport ( Aerodrom Tivat ) is by passenger numbers in front of the Podgorica Airport is the largest international airport in Montenegro . It is located in the Bay of Kotor 4 km south of Tivat directly on the European route E65 / E80 .
history
The airport opened on September 25, 1971. An earthquake in 1979 caused severe damage, which is why this required immediate repairs, which were combined with expansion work. In 2006 the terminal was renovated and modernized. On April 23, 2003, the airport was transferred from JAT Airways to the state-owned Airports of Montenegro .
Due to its location on the touristically heavily visited northern Adriatic coast of Montenegro with the cities of Kotor and Budva , the airport is also increasingly used by charter airlines in the summer months. This means that around 80 percent of the passenger volume is handled in the summer months.
Airfield
The airfield is located between the sea (west) and the mountainous hinterland (east). The runway (runway) runs in a NW direction and ends less than 100 m from the sea. It is an asphalt runway 2500 m long. The terminal building is on the northern part of the runway, to which there is no fully paved taxiway. The location of the airfield requires demanding approach and landing maneuvers.
technology
Tivat Airport has 4D classification according to ICAO, airspace class D. The airport is equipped with the PAPI system , which enables night landings. The aviation authority for Serbia and Montenegro, SMATSA, is planning a new tower facility, which is due to go into operation in 2016.
Airlines and Destinations
Mainly Belgrade and Moscow are served. In the German-speaking region, Düsseldorf is the only airport that has a weekly flight. The operating airline is Eurowings , we flew with an A319 .
It was planned by Montenegro Airlines to establish a connection to Hanover (HAJ) with a Fokker100 . The connection was only served for a short time.
The airport is also served by many charter airlines. These are mainly chartered by tour operators from the CIS countries , but also increasingly by Western European tourism groups.
