Collin Martin (born November 9, 1994 in Chevy Chase , Maryland ) is an American football player who currently plays for San Diego Loyal in the USL Championship . Martin announced that he was gay on June 29, 2018 while playing for Minnesota United in Major League Soccer (MLS) . This made him the only openly gay soccer player in a top national league and the only athlete in a US major league.
Life
Martin was born in Chevy Chase, Maryland, not far from Washington, DC . There he grew up as the second youngest child up to the age of 12 in a religious family before moving to Ohio to improve his game at the Brad Friedels soccer school . After his 18-month stay with Friedel Martin attended in his native Chevy Chase High School and eventually moved in 2012 to Winston-Salem to where the Wake Forest University to visit. He earned a degree in history from George Washington University .
Career
Club career
Martin began his career in the DC United Academy , the youth academy of DC United , whose MLS team was also his first professional station. Before moving to the MLS, Martin studied at Wake Forest University , for whose football team, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, he played in the NCAA - Atlantic Coast Conference . He preferred this step to a job with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , which had also made him an offer.
After just a year with the Demon Deacons, Martin moved back to DC United. In order to gain gaming experience, Martin was sent to the Farmtam , the Richmond Kickers , in the United Soccer League (USL). In his first season at DC United, he was able to win the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup with his team , but remained without use in this competition.
In 2017, Martin moved to Minnesota United . For his new club, he played his first game on March 25, when he came on for Mohammed Saeid in the 63rd minute . In April 2019, Martin was awarded to Hartford Athletic for the remainder of the year.
For the 2020 season, Martin moved within the USL Championship to the newly founded San Diego Loyal SC , which competed in the USL Championship for the first time in 2020.
National team
Collin Martin played on the US junior national teams for under 14 , 15 and 17 year olds . He was also a member of the U-20 national team , for which he appeared in five official internationals.
