Brian Bliss (born September 28, 1965 in Webster , New York ) is a retired American football player . After he ended his career as a player in 1999, he started working as a coach.
He is currently Technical Director at Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer . He also looks after the US U-20 national team as an assistant coach.
Player career
Bliss attended Webster Schroeder High School in Webster, New York. After high school, he went to Southern Connecticut State University , where he played for the college team from 1983 to 1986. During this time he was also appointed to the US national soccer team. On December 2, 1984, he made his debut in a game against Ecuador. The game ended 2-2. Until 1987, however, was not reappointed. In the same year he moved to Cleveland Force, which played in the Major Indoor Soccer League . He only played one season in Cleveland. In 1988 he took part in the Summer Olympics in Seoul and was eliminated with the US team in the preliminary round of the tournament.
In 1989 he played five games for Albany Capitals in the American Soccer League . Most of the time he was on the road with the national team. He was on the pitch at every qualifying match for the 1990 World Cup. At the World Cup he only played in the game against Austria. After the World Cup, he was in the squad of the Boston Bolts, which played in the American Professional Soccer League . But he did not stay there long and switched to Energie Cottbus at short notice .
After one season went to Chemnitzer FC . Bliss only played there for half a year. He then went to FC Carl Zeiss Jena . He stayed there until 1996.
In 1996, Major League Soccer was born in the United States and Bliss returned. He was chosen by the Columbus crew . After two seasons he moved to the MetroStars and later to the Kansas City Wizards .
His career as a player he ended in 1999 in the USL A-League with the Connecticut Wolves, which he also coached during the season.
Coaching career
In 2000, Bliss became an assistant coach under Bob Gansler at the Kansas City Wizards. In 2006 he briefly took over the position of coach when Gansler resigned. Three quarters of a year later, Curt Onalfo took over the post of head coach. Bliss then moved to Kansas Youth Soccer and became their State Director of Coaching . He was also a coach at Olathe Northwest High School.
Bliss was also Technical Director with the Columbus Crew before moving to Chicago Fire after six seasons.
He also looks after the US U-20 national team as an assistant coach.
