The Austin Football Club , shortly Austin FC , is a future franchise of professional football - League Major League Soccer (MLS), located in the Texas capital, Austin , that the season 2021 will start the game mode.

Columbus Crew fans protest against the planned move in May 2018

In October 2017, Anthony Precourt's plans became public to relocate the Columbus Crew , which was then owned by Precourt Sports Ventures, from Columbus , Ohio to Austin , Texas for the 2019 season . There was resistance to these plans under the motto #SaveTheCrew . In October 2018, it was announced that Jimmy Haslam , owner of the Cleveland Browns , his wife Dee Haslam and Pete Edwards, former team doctor, had entered into negotiations with Precourt Sports Ventures to purchase the Columbus Crew. Major League Soccer then announced that Precourt Sports Ventures could start with an expansion team in Austin from the 2021 season at the latest if the negotiations were successful. On January 1, 2019, Precourt Sports Ventures finally sold the rights to the Columbus Crew to the buyer group.

On January 15, 2019, Major League Soccer announced that Austin FC would join the league as the 27th franchise from the 2021 season. The venue will be a newly built stadium that will seat 20,000 and cost $ 225 million . FC Austin will be the first franchise in the city to play in one of the highest professional leagues in North America (MLS, MLB , NBA , NFL , NHL ), as well as the third MLS franchise in Texas alongside FC Dallas and Houston Dynamo .

Josh Wolff was introduced as the franchise's first head coach on July 23, 2019, followed by Claudio Reyna as the first sports director in November 2019 .

Austin FC will build its own stadium on McKalla Place in north Austin.

Austin FC is owned by Two Oak Ventures, which previously operated as Precourt Sports Ventures. The CEO is the American businessman Anthony Precourt. Other minority owners are u. a. actor Matthew McConaughey , businessman Eduardo Margain, Marius Haas ( Dell Technologies ), and Bryan Sheffield.
