Alejandro Bedoya (born April 29, 1987 in Englewood , New Jersey ) is an American football player . The midfielder , who made his debut for the national team of his home country in 2010 , has played his professional career in Sweden, Scotland, France and since summer 2016 with the Philadelphia Union in the USA.

Family and childhood

The New Jersey born midfielder grew up in Miami . His father, Adriano Bedoya, played professional football in South Korea and Colombia , as did his grandfather Fabio. Both parents are from Colombia. In 2005 Bedoya graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale .

Career

Beginnings

The year he graduated, he won the 5A Florida State Championship with the high school team and was named Best Player of the Year. In his college days he played for the selection team of Boston College and Fairleigh Dickinson University . He was nominated for the Hermann Trophy for both teams .

First years in Europe

Since many college footballers were aiming for a professional career through the MLS SuperDraft, Bedoya decided to move abroad. At the end of 2008 he signed a contract with the Swedish first division club Örebro SK in Europe and switched to the club on January 7, 2009. He made his first game in the Allsvenskan on April 6, 2009 as a substitute for Nordin Gerzić . In the following time he continued to develop under coach Sixten Boström and became a regular player in the left midfield. With the team around Samuel Wowoah , Magnus Kihlberg , Patrik Anttonen and Michael Almebäck , he surprised third in the table in the 2010 season .

Moved to Scotland and returned to Sweden

In August 2011 Bedoya moved to the Glasgow Rangers . At his new club, however, he was only used sporadically. In his twelve appearances this season he was in the starting line-up five times. After the Scottish club's forced relegation to fourth division, Bedoya returned to Sweden in August 2012 and joined the reigning double winner Helsingborgs IF . For the southern Sweden Bedoya came to 12 missions in the point game operation. He also played with said club in the Europa League . In the group stage Bedoya played with Helsingborgs IF against UD Levante , Twente Enschede and Hannover 96 . Bedoya was used in all six games and scored a goal in the 3-1 defeat against Hannover 96 and against Twente Enschede in a surprising 3-1 win.

Transfer to FC Nantes

In the summer of 2013 he moved to the French first division club and promoted FC Nantes . Bedoya made 32 appearances for the club from Pays de la Loire and scored six goals. With Nantes, he meanwhile finished fifth. FC Nantes left a number of favorites behind. At the end of the season, the 13th place in the table jumped out.

National team

Alejandro Bedoya took part in the preparation program for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing with the US U23 national team, but did not go to China.

On December 22, 2009, he was nominated for the first time for a training camp for the US national team. On January 23, 2010 Bedoya made his international debut against Honduras. He was substituted on in the 61st minute and subsequently received good reviews for his game.

Bedoya was in the provisional squad for the 2010 World Cup , but was not included in the final team.
