The St. Thomas Aquinas High School is in the southwest of the city of Fort Lauderdale in the US state of Florida located secondary school in private ownership of the Archdiocese of Miami . It was created in 1952 through a spin-off from a school founded in 1936 and was named after the Catholic Saint Thomas Aquinas in 1961 . In 1996 she received the Blue Ribbon Award , the United States Department of Education's highest distinction for excellence in education.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School is attended by around 2,170 students who are taught by around 130 teachers. Admission requirements include passing an entrance test and two letters of recommendation from the school you attended previously. She is known nationwide in the USA for the success of her students in the sporting field, due to which her sport department took third place on a nationwide ranking of the magazine Sports Illustrated in 2005 . The school's American football team has won two national championships and the Florida state championship six times.

The graduates of St. Thomas Aquinas High School include tennis players Chris Evert and Mark Merklein , American football players Michael Irvin and Brian Piccolo , American national soccer players Alejandro Bedoya and Eric Eichmann , and volleyball national team Foluke Akinradewo , Olympic and multiple world champion in the 400-meter run Sanya Richards-Ross , the athlete Arman Hall , the golfer Jason Dufner , the writer Michael Connelly , the actors Billy Crudup and Chris Conrad , the screenwriter, film producer and director Steve Conrad and the Politician and former Maryland Governor Parris Glendening .
