qualification

The following division into the individual rounds has been taken from the 2015 UEFA five-year ranking. If the cup winner of a national association had qualified for the 2016/17 UEFA Champions League or would have already qualified for the 2016/17 Europa League, the next team from the national league got the worst possible starting position of this nation in the qualification for the Europa League, during the other teams moved up accordingly and took over the next better starting place. If a club was not approved for the UEFA competitions, the next best team in the national league moved up.

In the draw for each individual round, the teams were placed in two pots according to their respective club coefficient 2016 (KK), so that each seeded team (higher coefficient) competed against an unset (lower coefficient).

For the first time since this season there was no starting place for the fair play winners.

Group stage

48 teams from 21 regional associations took part in the group stage, 16 teams qualified directly, plus ten clubs from the Champions League qualification. Another 22 places were determined in the Europa League qualifying rounds.

The group winners and runners-up qualified for the sixteenth-finals, while those placed third and fourth were eliminated from the competition. If two or more teams were tied after the group matches, the placement was determined by the following criteria:

  1. Number of points in direct comparison
  2. Goal difference in direct comparison
  3. Number of goals in direct comparison
  4. Number of away goals in direct comparison
  5. If, after applying criteria 1-4, two or more teams still occupy the same place in the table, criteria 1-4 are reapplied for these teams. If this does not result in a definitive placement, criteria 6–12 will be applied.
  6. Goal difference from all group matches
  7. higher number of goals scored
  8. higher number of away goals scored
  9. higher number of wins
  10. higher number of away wins
  11. lower number of minus points through yellow and red cards (yellow card 1 minus point, red card 3 minus points, yellow-red card 3 minus points)
  12. Club coefficients

The 48 teams qualified for the group stage were divided into four pots of 12 teams on the basis of their club coefficient (KK), and one team from each pot was drawn into one of the 12 groups (A to L); Teams from the same association could not be drawn into the same group.

The draw took place on August 26, 2016 in Monaco . The games took place from September 15 to December 8, 2016.
