PSV Eindhoven
Sun and his twin brother Sun Ji were both linked with PSV Eindhoven in 2006 , but only Xiang Sun was signed on loan from Chinese club Shanghai Shenhua . No details were disclosed about financial aspects of the transfer. Xiang Sun said to the Chinese daily Shanghai Daily : “ The Dutch proposal is a great opportunity for me to take my career to a new level and I just can't let it slip through my fingers […] […] I am appealing to Shenhua to let me go. ”
Sun made his debut on European soil on February 17, 2007 against Heracles Almelo as a full-back . Coach Ronald Koeman attested Sun a successful debut, mainly because of Sun's good overview and his precise passes. Sun was the first Chinese to make it into the Dutch Honor Division. From February 20, 2007, Xiang Sun was also the first Chinese to play a UEFA Champions League game (against Arsenal London ). Despite some strong performances, Xiang Sun's involvement with PSV ended after one season and he returned to Shanghai Shenhua.
Austria Vienna
On June 1, 2008, FK Austria Wien signed the left- back on loan for a year with an option for another year. As before in the Netherlands , Xiang Sun became the first Chinese to be signed for the Austrian Bundesliga . He made his debut at Wiener Austria on July 9, 2008 against SK Austria Kärnten . In his second game for Austria against SV Kapfenberg , Sun scored an own goal in the last minute that equalized. He scored his first goal for FK Austria Wien in the quarter-finals of the ÖFB Cup against SK Sturm Graz on March 3, 2009 in the 114th minute from a free kick to equalize 1-1. In the same game, he also converted the last and decisive penalty in the penalty shoot-out and thus secured the Vienna Austria promotion to the semi-finals. He scored his first championship goal for Austria Wien 4 days later against LASK Linz again with a free kick. In Austria he also won the trophy in 2009 . However, his contract with Austria will not be extended beyond the 2008/09 season due to excessive transfer demands from China .

Sun Xiang has played in the Chinese national soccer team since 2002 . In 40 games so far he has scored three goals, most recently in the 1-0 away win on June 22, 2008 against Australia in Sydney .
