Markus Schmidt (born October 12, 1977 in Wiener Neustadt ) is a former Austrian football player and now coach .
Career
As a player
Schmidt began his career at SV Rohrbach in Burgenland . Between 1992 and 1994 he played in the BNZ Burgenland . In 1998 he moved to SV Mattersburg in the Regionalliga Ost, where he developed into a regular player and top performer. In the 1999/2000 season he was promoted to the second-rate first division with Mattersburg . After winning the First League in 2003 and advancing to the Bundesliga with the Greens, he made his first Bundesliga appearance in the same year. He made his debut on July 30, 2003 against FC Kärnten when he came on for Bernd Kaintz in the 87th minute . His greatest success was reaching the 2006 cup final with SV Mattersburg.
For the 2011/12 season he moved into the squad of the amateurs of Mattersburg. After the end of that season, he ended his career.
As a trainer
After retiring from his career, he became assistant coach for the amateurs at SV Mattersburg in 2013 . For the 2016/17 season he was head coach of this. With Mattersburg II he was promoted to the Regionalliga in 2018 .
In August 2018 he became the interim head coach of the club's professionals. After a game as coach of the professionals, a 0-0 draw against FC Admira Wacker Mödling , he was replaced by Klaus Schmidt .
