Veigar Páll Gunnarsson (born March 21, 1980 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic football player . The striker, who made his debut for the Icelandic national team in 2001 , was twice Icelandic and once Norwegian national champions.

Career

Career start in Iceland and bad luck in Norway

Veigar Páll Gunnarsson made his debut for UMF Stjarnan in 1996 when he was a substitute for the Úrvalsdeild . Despite relegation in the following year, he remained loyal to the club in the second division and established himself as a core force of the team. After two seasons in the lower house in 1999, the promotion succeeded. After a season in the first class, which the club again ended on a relegation zone, he left both the club and the country.

Veigars' new employer was the unique Norwegian master Strømsgodset IF . Again, luck failed and again only one relegation place was occupied. He then returned to Iceland after a season and signed a contract with KR Reykjavík . With seven goals this season he contributed to winning the championship title. In the following year, too, he successfully defended his title with seven goals in 13 games.

Breakthrough abroad

In 2004 Veigar Páll Gunnarsson moved again to Norway, the new club was Stabæk Fotball . As with his first stay abroad, he had to accept relegation from the Tippeligaen in his first season . This time he stayed loyal to the club and at the side of Daniel Nannskog he formed the powerful storm of the team that was able to manage the direct promotion. Also in the first division he proved his scoring risk and scored 18 goals this season in the 2006 season. After he scored 15 or 12 goals in the following seasons, which contributed to winning the championship title in the club history of Stabæk Fotball for the first time in the 2008 season , he also attracted attention in southern Europe.

On January 1, 2009 Veigar Páll moved to Ligue 1 for AS Nancy . Nine days later he made his debut for the club in the French premier league when he came on for Moncef Zerka in the 77th minute of the 2-1 defeat by OGC Nice . In the further course of the second half of the season he only came to five missions in which he could not score a goal. After he only ran up in the Coupe de la Ligue for the French club in the first half of the 2009/10 season, he decided to change clubs again and returned to Norway to Stabæk Fotball in January. On July 29, 2011 he signed a contract with Vålerenga Oslo until 2014.
