Career
Hjálmar Jónsson started playing football in his Icelandic homeland. In 1999 he moved from his hometown club IF Höttur to Keflavík ÍF . The defensive player made his debut at Landsbankadeild for his new club in the same year . Initially only a supplementary player, he made his breakthrough in the 2001 season and played each of the 18 season games. While he reached sixth place with the club, he played his way into the Icelandic U-21 selection , for which he appeared three times during the season. He had also recommended himself for the senior national team through his performances, in January of the following year he made his debut in the 0-0 draw against Kuwait in the national jersey.
Hjálmar had attracted attention outside the country's borders and joined the Swedish club IFK Göteborg before the 2002 season . At the club appearing in the Allsvenskan , he came on the side of Pontus Kåmark , Magnus Erlingmark , Jonas Henriksson and Martin Ericsson in his first season to ten league appearances. In the following years, various injuries slowed him down, so that he only temporarily appeared as a regular for the Gothenburg club. In 2004 he reached the final of the Swedish National Cup with the club , in which he could not avoid a 3-1 defeat against Djurgårdens IF on the side of Karl Svensson , Fredrik Risp and Magnus Johansson .
In the 2007 season , Hjálmar contributed to winning the Lennart Johansson Cup for the Swedish national champions in 23 league games in which he scored a goal . Again the team reached the cup final in the same year, in the 3-0 defeat against Kalmar FF by goals from César Santin and Patrik Ingelsten he was with Adam Johansson , Mattias Bjärsmyr and Ragnar Sigurðsson in the four-man defense chain. He finally became a regular player in the following year with the club again in the cup final, in which Kalmar FF took revenge for the previous year's defeat on penalties . In 2009 it was possible to defend the title when the club reached the final for the third time in a row as runner-up. However, against the reigning champions AIK , the team lost 2-0 after goals from Mauro Iván Óbolo and Antônio Flávio .
