Nicolas Seube (born August 11, 1979 in Toulouse ) is a former French football player .

career

Seube began playing football at the age of six and from then on played for some small clubs in the Toulouse area. In 1992 he was accepted into the youth department of Toulouse FC and, at the age of 16, sent to its training center. From there in 1997 he made the jump to the reserve team, for which he ran up in the fourth division. The right-footed player initially played mainly in defensive midfield, but then also as a full-back. After three years in the B selection, Seube signed his first professional contract with Toulouse in 2000. As a result, he was in the squad of the professional team, but was temporarily no longer allowed to play for the reserve from the club side. Because he could not assert himself in the first division team and had not played a single first division game until February 2001, he was transferred back to the reserve team at that time.

Accordingly, he decided in the summer of 2001 to leave Toulouse and instead signed with SM Caen , where sports director Guy David bet on the young player. For the second division he made his debut on the first day of the 2001/02 season, where he was used in the 3: 4 against Grenoble Foot over the full length of the game. During his first year in Caen, Seube became a regular player and was able to maintain this position in the following seasons. He stayed that way after he was promoted to the first division with Caen in 2004 and had to accept the direct relegation a year later. Also in 2005 Seube stood with his team in the final of the Coupe de la Ligue , which however was lost 2-1 to Racing Strasbourg .

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season, the player, who had been with Caen for five years at this point, was named team captain by coach Franck Dumas . At the end of his first year as captain, Seube and his team were promoted to the first division, followed by relegation in 2009 and relegation in 2010. The associated second division championship was also the first title of his career. After Caen had risen to the second division in 2012, a new coach was hired in Patrice Garande , who took Seube's captaincy and transferred it to his long-time teammate Jérémy Sorbon . In the same year, the almost 33-year-old Seube extended his contract for another three years. With 373 league appearances in the top two divisions, he overtook Anthony Deroin (372 games) with the encounter against Gazélec FC Ajaccio on May 24, 2013 and set a new club record. In 2014 he managed to return to the top division with Caen. He was then regularly called up and reached relegation with the team at the end of the 2014/15 season. In the 2015/16 season, the team was able to improve significantly and occupy seventh place in the table. In 2017 he just managed to stay up with the team and ended his professional career at the end of the 2016/17 season at the age of almost 38. For Caen he had played 232 first and 245 second division games in 16 years.

Political commitment

In the run-up to the 2008 local elections, Seube supported Philippe Duron , the candidate of the Socialist Party for the office of mayor of the city of Caen , who ultimately won the election. The footballer also described himself as a clear supporter of the political left. Referring to the salaries of footballers, Seube said that while earnings were too high, he also referred to the enormous amount of work that has to be done before and during a career.
