Nils Göran David Malmqvist ( pronunciation : [ ˌʝœːɹan ˈmalːmkvist ], born June 6, 1924 in Jönköping ; † October 18, 2019 ) was a Swedish linguist , historian , sinologist , translator and since 1985 a member of the Svenska Academies .

Life

Malmqvist studied Sinology with Bernhard Karlgren at Stockholm University . After three years of studying in China (1948 to 1950), he graduated from Stockholm in 1951. From 1953 to 1955 he was a lecturer in sinology at the University of London , then he was Swedish cultural attaché in Beijing . In 1958 he went as a lecturer at the Australian National University in Canberra , where he was appointed professor in 1961. In 1965, Malmqvist accepted a call from Stockholm University as professor of Chinese language and culture. Since 1988 he has been a full member of the Academia Europaea .

Malmqvist published fundamental studies on Chinese grammar, phonology, language history and language typology.
