Carl August Haupt

Carl August Haupt (born August 28, 1810 in Kuhnau / Silesia , † July 4, 1891 in Berlin ) was a German organist , music teacher and composer .

Life

Haupt was trained as organist between 1827 and 1830 in Berlin by August Wilhelm Bach , Bernhard Klein and Siegfried Dehn and worked a. a. at the Parochialkirche (Berlin) from 1848 until his death. He gained a reputation as an outstanding organist and in 1869 succeeded August Wilhelm Bach as director of the Royal Institute for Church Music , where he taught as a professor. The first music professor in the USA, John Knowles Paine , studied in Berlin a. a. studied organ literature with main, singing with Gustav Wilhelm Teschne r and composition with Wilhelm Wieprecht . Haupt wrote an organ school, an organ chorale book and composed numerous songs . Of his compositions for organ, only his large C major fugue and two chorale arrangements have survived. Haupt also published the organ works of his late friend Carl Ludwig Thiele .
