The Daubensee (dialect: Dubesee ) is located on the north side of the Gemmi Pass in the Valais community of Leukerbad in the Bernese Alps . It is one of the few larger natural lakes in the canton.

location

The Daubensee stretches in north-south direction over a length of 1.5 kilometers and is around 400 meters wide at its widest point. On the eastern side, the terrain rises through a slope called Schafberg to the Rinderhorn , while the northern continuation of the Lämmerengrat rises above the west bank, which reaches its highest point in the Roten Totz (2848 m above sea level).

The Lämmerendalu flows into the lake from the south . The water flows underground and comes back to the surface at the foot of a rock below the village of Varen VS.

A two-hour hike around the lake leads from the Gemmi pass. The hiking trail from Kandersteg to Leukerbad leads along the east side of the Daubensee.

On the last Sunday in July, the shepherd's festival takes place on the east bank of Lake Dauben, where around 800 sheep gather.

Because of its good wind conditions, the lake is popular with kite surfers in summer and winter . Europe's highest catamaran school is also operated on the Daubensee . There are no fish in Daubensee. Due to its shallow depth, the lake is already empty in November and only refills when the snow melts.
