Irinej I. ( Serbian - Cyrillic Иринеј , German also Irenäus von Niš ; born August 28, 1930 as Miroslav Gavrilović in Vidova near Čačak , Kingdom of Yugoslavia ) has been Metropolitan of Belgrade and Karlovci , Archbishop of Peć and Serbian Orthodox Patriarch since 2010 .

Life

He attended high school in Čačak, then the theological school in Prizren . He then studied at the theological faculty in Belgrade. After serving in the Yugoslav army, he was ordained a monk by the Patriarch German in 1959 by the name of Irinej. From 1959 to 1968 Irinej taught as a professor at the theological school in Prizren. After his studies in Athens he became head of the monk school in Ostrog Monastery , and from 1971 to 1974 he worked again as a professor in Prizren. In 1974 he became Bishop of Moravica and Vicar of Patriarch German, in 1975 Bishop of Niš . He stayed in Niš for the next 35 years.

On January 22, 2010, Irinej was elected as the successor of Pavle as Patriarch of the Serbian Orthodox Church or drawn with the "apostolic way of voting": First, a secret vote is held until the spiritual dignitaries agree on three candidates. Then a monk mixes the sealed envelopes with the names of the bishops and draws the patriarch. Before this, the Holy Spirit is called in, who is thus responsible for the election of the new patriarch. This voting procedure was introduced to include a. to preserve the autonomy of the church in electing patriarchs and to limit the influence of the state.

The enthronement took place on January 23, 2010 in the Belgrade Cathedral .
