Sremski Karlovci ( Serbian - Cyrillic Сремски Карловци , Croatian Srijemski Karlovci , Hungarian Karlóca , German  (outdated) (Syrmisch-) Karlowitz ) is a city in the autonomous province of Vojvodina in Serbia . It is located in the historical region of Syrmia , but is assigned to the Okrug Južna Bačka . The city lies on the Danube and at the foot of the Fruška Gora National Park, just a few kilometers southeast of the provincial capital Novi Sad . In 2002 Sremski Karlovci had about 8,800 inhabitants.

history

Slavic tribes from Central and Central Eastern Europe settled in the 6th century .

In the Middle Ages there was the Hungarian fortress Karom near Karlowitz, which was temporarily under the rule of Serbian kings and princes. The Ottomans conquered the fortress around 1521, and in 1687 the fortress and town came under the rule of the Habsburgs . Between November 16, 1698 and January 26, 1699 a peace congress met in Karlowitz, which ended in the Peace of Karlowitz . In the 18th century, Sremski Karlovci became the cultural center of the Serbs who lived under Habsburg sovereignty. In 1713 the Orthodox Archdiocese of Sremski Karlovci was founded. The archbishop was the spiritual head of the Orthodox Serbs and, at first, also of the Orthodox Romanians of the Habsburg Empire. In 1745 the city was annexed to the military border. On May 13, 1848, Sremski Karlovci was the venue for the so-called May meeting, in which the Serbs of the Habsburg Empire first proclaimed Vojvodina . In 1872 the military border was dissolved as part of the reorganization of Austria-Hungary and all of Syrmia with Karlowitz was annexed to Croatia-Slavonia .

After the First World War , the representatives of the Serb majority population of Syrmia decided on September 25, 1918 to unify Syrmia with the Kingdom of Serbia independent of Croatia-Slavonia. In the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes - from 1929 Yugoslavia - Sremski Karlovci became the seat of the Syrmia district. With Hitler's attack on Yugoslavia in 1941, the city was assigned to the Independent State of Croatia , which was proclaimed by the Ustasche and renamed Hrvatski Karlovci (Croatian Karlowitz). At the end of 1944, Sremski Karlovci was captured by the partisans .
