Erich Möchel

Erich Möchel (born August 28, 1957 in Linz / Upper Austria ) is a former editor of Futurezone , the former IT news website of the Austrian broadcasting company .

Life

His research on the Enfopol papers caused a sensation , which led to further reports on the European standardization efforts in matters of telecommunications surveillance , which he published in the c't , Telepolis and at futureZone.ORF.at.

Together with the Telepolis editorial team, Möchel received the European Prize for Online Journalism at the Net-Media 2000 media conference in the “Investigative Reporting” category (2000).

He is a member of the Board of Advisors of Privacy International and is a co-founder of the first Austrian Big Brother Awards in 1999 as well as of Quintessenz ("Association for the Restoration of Citizens' Rights in the Information Age").

Since 2003 he has been lecturer for online and multimedia journalism at the FH Joanneum in Graz . Möchel holds a master's degree in philosophy in German, English and American literature and has a degree in education.

Before that Möchel worked as a media critic and columnist for Falter , Radio OE 1 , Standard and other media.

Möchel regularly gives lectures on the subject of data protection and data security, automated monitoring of communication and digital civil rights. He has been invited to the EU Parliament several times as an expert on the subject of "monitoring telephony networks" , lectured at the London School of Economics , the Universities of Frankfurt and Munich , the ZKM Karlsruhe , the FH Joanneum Graz and other Austrian universities of applied sciences. There are also appearances at the Computers Freedom and Privacy Washington 1999, the Einstein Forum Potsdam, the Ars Electronica Festival 2007, numerous congresses of the Chaos Computer Club , at events of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce and various congresses of the Global Internet Liberty Campaign, European Digital Rights and Privacy International .
