Einstein Forum on the Neuer Markt

The Einstein Forum in Potsdam is an operational foundation under public law and a place for international scientific exchange.

Current intellectual developments are discussed at interdisciplinary conferences and workshops and the various disciplines can enter into a dialogue with each other and with the public.

The organization was founded in 1993 by the state of Brandenburg with the participation of members of international institutions such as the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and is headed by the US philosopher Susan Neiman .

The Einstein Forum sees itself as a place of intellectual innovation outside the university framework and aims to facilitate the exchange of ideas across disciplines and geographical boundaries.

Lectures, workshops and conferences open to everyone are intended to enable the public to gain insight into the work of outstanding contemporary thinkers, and at the same time to encourage them to transcend traditional academic boundaries.

The director of the Einstein Forum is the philosopher Susan Neiman , members of the board of trustees include Jan Philipp Reemtsma , Michael Naumann and Gesine Schwan , and members of the advisory board include Ute Frevert , Thomas Naumann and Jens Reich .

As an institute whose task lies in the development of work between the boundaries of different scientific areas, the Einstein Forum is not limited to specific research topics. However, his program can be divided into four general subject areas, always with reference to social issues:

  • Ethics and society
  • History as present
  • Art and knowledge
  • Understanding of nature

Publications

A number of publications have emerged from the work of the Einstein Forum since 1995.

In Akademie Verlag appearing Einstein books in which outstanding contributions from the program of the Einstein Forum are collected at particularly current and key issues of modern science.

In the edition suhrkamp selected contributions from the lecture series Inheritance of Our Time are published. This series was organized from 1996 to 2000 together with the Berliner Festspiele and had set itself the goal of subjecting the knowledge of the individual disciplines to a critical examination at the end of the millennium.

In addition, the Einstein Forum also agrees to work with other publishers for certain individual projects.
