Gerhard Latzel
Gerhard Paul Latzel (* 28. August 1912 in Breslau , † 14. September 1980 in Altmühltal ) was a German composer in chess .
Chess composition
At the age of 15 Latzel began to compose chess problems. In 1930 Latzel became a member of the Die Schwalbe association and was treasurer for some time. In the chess column of the Lippische Landes-Zeitung he was responsible for chess composition .
In 1958 he was appointed International Chess Composition Judge. In addition to numerous two-moveers, he composed multi-moveers, later he also worked on auxiliary mat tasks. Many were included in the FIDE albums , here he came to 29.5 points. For this he became the International Master of Chess Composition in 1975 .

Knight deductions (except 1. Nxd6) threaten 2. Qe4 mate. Eight knight deductions are possible ("knight wheel"), but only one leads to the goal. All others are only refuted by a black defense , which is not repeated in any variant.

Private
Latzel was a senior tax advisor by profession.
In 1980 Latzel was at the FIDE conference in Wiener Neustadt . On his return he drove on the autobahn, where a traffic jam had developed in the Altmühltal. A horse panicked there and fatally kicked Latzel in the head in his car.
