Willy Popp
Willy Popp (born January 28, 1902 in Würzburg , † April 19, 1978 in Würzburg) was a German composer and functionary in chess composition.
Chess composition
At the age of 12 Popp learned the game of chess from his older brother. Around 1924 he began to compose chess problems. He was encouraged to solve the problem by Wilhelm Karsch and Willy Roscher . He preferred two and three migrants. With it he won many prizes, and some chess problems were also included in the FIDE albums .

In the diagonal b8 – f4 you can see the black knights being half-pinned. Triple self-restraint of the black by deducting a jumper from the restraint line, which is exploited in mate.
The functionary
From 1932 Popp was in charge of the problematic section of the Franconian workers' chess newspaper . In 1935 he became 1st chairman of the Problemfreunde von Unterfranken. From 1943 to 1945 he published a chess newspaper for the wounded in the Mainfränkische Zeitung.
In 1946 he was given responsibility for the chess corner of the Würzburg newspaper Main-Post . This was also recognized internationally, he led it for more than three decades until the end of his life. Since 1947 he was the problem manager of the Lower Franconian Chess Association for 32 years.
Awards
In 1967 he was awarded the title of International Chess Composition Referee . In 1977 the German Chess Federation awarded him the letter of honor.
