Mate in 3 moves

Template: checkerboard / maintenance / new

Solution:
1. h4 (threatens 2. Nf4 and 3. Bh3 mate) Black prevents this threat of mate with rook moves on the 8th row. For example after Rb8 2. Nf4 fails because of the unleashing 2.… Rb1! after which 3rd Bh3 + Ng2 follows. White reacts by adjusting the rook line to every rook move with the e3 bishop and at the same time clearing the e3 square for his knight.
1 ... Ra8 second La7 together with third Se3 matt
1 ... Rb8 second Bb6 besides 3. Se 3 matt
1 ... Rc8 second Lc5 besides 3. Se 3 matt
1 ... Rd8 second Ld4 besides 3. Se 3 matt
. 1 ... Rf8 2. Bf4 besides 3. Se 3 matt
1 ... Rg8 2. Bg5 besides 3. Se 3 matt
1 ... T8 2. Bh6 besides 3. Se 3 matt
White can not immediately pull Be3 (Se 3 to matt threaten) because Black parries with 1.… e3, the pawn on e3 is then covered.

author

From 1937 Kniest headed the chess section in the Bottroper Volkszeitung and thus succeeded his brother. From 1959 to 1969 he worked as editor of the magazine Die Schwalbe , from 1971 to 1988 he was editor of the magazine for fairy tale chess fairy chess . He self-published 4 volumes by Caissa's castle residents , in which chess composers introduce themselves in short articles .

Self-matte collection

His collection of self- matte miniatures, taken over from his brother Albert in 1941, was very well known. In lectures such as in Andernach 1990, Kniest contributed tirelessly to popularizing this genre. He did not live to see the long-awaited publication of a book. After his death, his collection was recorded and further developed by Rainer Staudte; for Frank Müller it was the starting point for his self-matte collection, and ultimately the latter, together with Hans Gruber, bore the brunt of creating the book manuscript.

Private

Kniest was a civil engineer and architect and ran an architectural office. He had his own printing house in which he produced the editions of the magazines Die Schwalbe and feenschach for several years . In 1993 he died of complications from heart surgery.
