Anacleto Angelini (born January 17, 1914 in Ferrara , † August 28, 2007 in Santiago de Chile ) was an Italian - Chilean entrepreneur . He was one of the richest men in Chile ; his fortune figures range from $ 3.7 billion to $ 6 billion at the time of his death.

origin

Angelini's father emigrated in 1936 as a businessman with his three sons to Ethiopia, which was conquered under Mussolini and declared a colony . After the Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie regained power with British support during World War II , the Angelinis returned to Italy. Anacleto emigrated to Chile in 1948.

Entrepreneurship in Chile

With the capital he had brought with him, he and other immigrants founded a paint factory, Pinturas Tajamar , and soon afterwards the construction company Francini y Angelini together with the Italian Antonio Francini, who had also emigrated .

In 1953 he took over the small fishing company Eperva in Arica from an Italian , which he successfully managed. As a result, he expanded his activities in this business area and sold his share in the construction company. Through expansion and takeovers, the company soon became the largest fishing company in South America as Indo y Eperva . In fish processing, fishmeal production in particular turned out to be a profitable business, as this product is used in chicken fattening , which was expanding rapidly in Chile during those years .

Even under Pinochet's dictatorship, the group of companies continued to grow and diversify its business areas. Indo y Eperva developed into a holding company that in the 1980s was only 20% active in the fishing sector. In the 1980s, Angelini reduced its involvement in fishing and fish processing due to increasing competition from Peru and the increased occurrence of unfavorable climatic phenomena, especially from El Niño . However, the Angelinis group of companies remained the leader in fishmeal production.

Agnelini's activities have expanded since the 1980s, particularly in the energy sector and cellulose production . In 1985 and 1986, Angelini's group of companies took over 41% of the shares in Compañía de Petróleos de Chile ( Copec ) , which is not only Chile's leading distributor of fuels and lubricants, but also manages large areas of forest and operates cellulose and paper mills through its subsidiary Celulosa Arauco . The company is critically viewed as a leader in the deforestation of Chilean forests and has made repeated headlines for its water pollution. His holding company, which is now called Antarchile SA and is one of the largest companies in Latin America, is also active in the areas of financial services, insurance, mining, shipbuilding and maritime transport . Angelini sold his stake in Chilean energy companies around the turn of the millennium, when foreign companies entered the domestic market as investors.

Late years

In 1994 Angelini was granted Chilean citizenship by decree from President Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle . Angelini leaves no children; his successor in the group and at Copec is his nephew Roberto Angelini Rossi . Angelini lived a secluded life and appeared very rarely in public and in the press.
