Peter Assmann (born August 28, 1963 in Zams ) is an Austrian art historian, museum director, writer and visual artist.

Life

Peter Assmann studied art history , history and German at the University of Innsbruck . In 1990 he was with a dissertation on the fresco features of the monastery of Santa Maria Novella doctorate . He was director of the Upper Austrian State Museums , which he left on March 31, 2013 due to extensive changes in the organizational structure. From 2013 to 2014 he was director of the Angerlehner Museum in Thalheim near Wels.

Assmann has also been active in literature since 1995. As a visual artist, he was a founding member of the artist groups c / o: K - Institute for Art Initiatives and Sinnenbrand , and is also an artist member of the Wiener Künstlerhaus , the Welser Künstlergilde and the IG Bildende Kunst .

From 2002 to 2012 he was President of the Austrian Museum Association, and from 2009 to 2014 a board member of the Network of European Museum Organizations (NEMO) . Assmann was also involved as a board member of the NGO SOS-Menschenrechte Österreich , which is particularly active in the field of refugee aid .

In 2015 he was appointed director of the Museum of Palazzo Ducale in Mantua . Due to a formal error in the appeal process, he lost his position in administrative court proceedings in the spring of 2017, but was confirmed in his position by the Italian State Council and was back in office on June 16, 2017. The administrative court action against the international advertisement for the director's position in Mantua (as well as 19 other museum director positions) was ultimately rejected by the Consiglio di Stato in 2018 .

In November 2018 it was announced that Assmann will take over the management of the Tiroler Landesmuseen Betriebsgesellschaft from November 2019 .
