Juan José Guzmán ordered the arrest of the priest Eduardo Vázquez (Fray Veneno), a zealot who praised José Rafael Carrera Turcios from San Miguel , whereupon Bishop José Jorge Viteri y Ungo intervened with Francisco Malespín and asked for an escort for Vázquez. Malespín, Viteri and Vázquez were cheered in San Jacinto and La Vega.
