Zeev Fraenkel

Zeev Fraenkel (born June 25, 1925 in Munich , † February 17, 2008 in Rehovot , Israel ) was a German-Jewish nuclear physicist .

At the age of twelve he emigrated with his family to Palestine . He served in the British Army's Jewish Brigade . He later studied physics at Technion and Columbia University before joining the Weizmann Institute . During his long career there, he became head of the nuclear physics department and later dean of the physics faculty. He made many contributions to understanding nuclear reactions. Together with Yair Yariv, he developed or expanded the so-called intranuclear cascade model to better understand such reactions. Until recently he was an active member of the PHENIX collaboration, whose research focus is on the discovery and understanding of the quark-gluon plasma .
