Ivan Tavčar (born August 28, 1851 in Poljane nad Skofjo Loko , † February 19, 1923 in Ljubljana ) was a Slovenian writer, lawyer and politician.

Tavčar was the oldest of eight children in a farming family. After attending grammar school, he studied law in Vienna from 1871 to 1875. In 1883 he was admitted to the bar in Trieste, and in 1884 he opened a law firm in Ljubljana, which he ran until his death. In the same year he married Franja Kosenini . Her house became a center of the city's national-liberal bourgeoisie.

At the same time, Tavčar began to be active in local politics, initially as a city councilor and from 1909 as a vice mayor. In 1911 he was elected mayor of Laibach; he held this office until 1921. In 1889 he was one of the founders of the Stadtsparkasse von Laibach and became its legal advisor. In 1900 he was elected to the board of directors of the credit bank, of which he became president in 1916. In addition, Tavčar was active in various cultural associations in the city, which made him an honorary citizen on his 70th birthday in 1921. His main literary work is the Visoška kronika , a historical novel about the time after the Thirty Years' War.
