Hans Jensen (Linguist)

Hans Detlev Jensen (born August 28, 1884 in Struvenhütten , Segeberg district , † August 4, 1973 in Rostock ) was a German linguist .

Life

After graduating from high school in Flensburg in 1905, he studied philology and oriental studies at the universities of Munich, Berlin and Kiel from 1905 to 1909 . From 1909 to 1927 he worked as a teacher in Odenkirchen (near Mönchengladbach), Hildesheim and from 1918 in Kiel. From 1915 to 1916 he served as an interpreter in the prisoner of war camp in Celle , most recently as a private.

From 1927 to 1943 he was a non-civil servant. Professor of General Linguistics and Indo-European Studies at Kiel University , in 1943 he became Professor and Lecturer in Comparative Linguistics at Rostock University . From 1946 to 1948 he was dismissed due to his membership in the NSDAP . From 1946 to 1947 he worked as a lecturer in Russian at the Rostock Adult Education Center. In 1953 he received a professorship and chair for comparative linguistics at the University of Greifswald , where he retired in 1957, but continued teaching until 1968.

In 1935 he created his standard work, The Scriptures in the Past and Present . In 1959 he was honored as an “ Outstanding Scientist of the People ” in the GDR.
