Guillaume de Saluste du Bartas (short Guillaume du Bartas , Occitan Guilhèm de Sallusti deu Bartàs ; * 1544 in Monfort , † August 28, 1590 in Mauvezin ) was a French writer of the Baroque .

life and work

Guillaume de Saluste du Bartas grew up in what is now the Département Gers , studied law at the University of Toulouse and lived from 1567 on the inherited estate and castle Le Bartas in today's village of Saint-Georges, canton Gimone-Arrats , east of Mauvezin. As a Huguenot (who also had friends among the Catholics) he was sponsored by Jeanne d'Albret , whose court was in Nérac (60 kilometers away). From 1585 he belonged to the advisory group of the later King Heinrich IV , for whom he was ambassador to Jacob VI in 1587 . traveled to Scotland and Denmark. He died at the age of 45. Du Bartas published the verses Judith , Uranie and Le Triomphe de la foi under the title La Muse Chrétienne in 1574 and triumphed himself in 1578 with La Semaine (The Week of Creation), followed by the Seconde Semaine in 1584 .
