Mathieu André, own Andreas Matthäus

Mathieu André , actually Andreas Matthäus (born February 8, 1909 in Vienna , Austria , † August 28, 1979 ), was an Austrian - French football player .

Career

The midfielder André was born in 1909 as a descendant of a French soldier who had settled in Vienna during the Napoleonic wars under the name Andreas Matthäus and grew up in the Vienna district of Jedlersdorf . In footballing terms, he grew up at SC Nord-Wien in 1912 , one of the strongest clubs in the VAFÖ league at the time . As early as 1932, he accepted an offer from FC Metz and went to France, then switched to FC Rouen and, as a naturalized Frenchman, made himself interesting for the national team .

In 1936 and 1937, the midfielder completed three international matches for the Equipe Tricolore , including the home game of the French team against Austria in the Prinzenparkstadion on January 24, 1937 . André was able to put himself in the limelight as a midfielder in this match and, with good assists, brought his club colleagues from Rouen, Bernard Antoinette , Roger Rio and Jean Nicolas , into promising positions several times. Especially his interaction with Nicolas embarrassed the Austrians time and again, but Nicolas, who had his greatest chance in the opening minutes - also after a short pass from André - could not use any of the chances. The game ended with goals from Stroh and Binder and Novicki with a 1: 2 defeat for France.

André was the first native Austrian to be appointed to the French national team, but found his “successor” in Auguste Jordan (16 games between 1938 and 1945), Henri Hiltl (two games in 1940 and 1944), Rodolphe in the 1930s and 1940s Hiden (a game in 1940) and Edmond Weiskopf from FC Metz (a game in 1939).
