Legionellales are an order of Proteobacteria that consists of two families. As with all proteobacteria, they are gram-negative bacteria.

Occurrence

Within the Legionellales, parasites of various unicellular organisms, invertebrates (invertebrates) and insects are represented, some are pathogenic for humans. The respective species are mostly intracellular parasites, i. H. living within host cells. Coxiella burnetii , the causative agent of Q fever (query fever), is obligate intracellularly and cannot reproduce outside of host cells. In Coxiella burnetii, transmission takes place mostly airborne by inhalation. In addition to humans, the species attacks arthropods such as ticks and occurs in animals such as z. B. Dogs or cattle. Outside the host cells, the bacterium takes a dormant position and remains infectious for up to a few months.

The type Legionella pneumophila causes Legionnaires' disease . The Legionella pneumophila bacterium was discovered at a meeting of legionnaires after the occurrence of pneumonia and was named accordingly.

Systematics

The order consists of the following families and genera:

Coxiella burnetii , causative agent of Q fever

The genera Fluoribacter and Tatlockia are controversial, the name is rarely used. The different representatives are mostly regarded as types of Legionella . The species Sarcobium lyticum was renamed Legionella lytica . The genus Rickettsiella was previously placed with the genus Wolbachia in the group ( tribe ) Wolbachieae of the family Rickettsiaceae .
