Hassan Mostofi

Mirzā Hassan Mostofi ol-Mamālek ( Persian مستوفی‌الممالک; * 1871 ; † August 28, 1932 ) was one of the most popular politicians in Iran in his time and Iranian Prime Minister several times.

Life

Hassan Mostofi was the son of Mirza Yousef Mostofi ol-Mamālek. Hassan Mostofi's father already served as finance minister and prime minister under Naser al-Din Shah . In 1881, after the death of his father, Naser al-Din Shah awarded the ten-year-old Hassan the title Mostofi ol-Mamālek ( Treasury of the Empire). At the age of 19 he was sent to study in France. He stayed in Paris until 1907. When he returned to Iran, he became Minister of Defense. He supported the constitutional revolution , the abolition of the absolutist monarchy and the establishment of a parliamentary government in Iran.

After the overthrow of Mohammed Ali Shah in 1909, Hassan Mostofi became finance minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mohammad Vali Khan Tonekaboni Sepahdar . Hassan Mostofi became Prime Minister for the first time in July 1910. He gave up his office during the attempted coup by Mohammed Ali Shah.

The fact that he was subsequently elected Prime Minister five more times shows what an important politician Hassan Mostofi was. After Reza Khan was elected Shah by parliament in 1925, Hassan Mostofi was appointed Prime Minister for one year in 1926. It was the sixth and last time that Mostofi held this office. Under Mostofi, the reform of the judicial system began, privileges for foreigners abolished and the construction of the Trans-Iranian Railway began .

He died in Tehran on August 28, 1932 and was buried in the Mostofi family mausoleum in Vanak . Alzahra University, the former Farah Pahlavi University, is located there today.
