Socrates Kapsaskis

Sokrates Kapsaskis ( Greek Σωκράτης Καψάσκης Sokrátis Kapsáskis , born February 19, 1928 in Zakynthos ; † August 28, 2007 ) was a Greek poet, film director and translator.

Kapsaskis lived with his grandfather from the age of 10. There he met the poets Takis Sinopoulos , Giorgos Pavlopoulos and Gavriel Pentzikis and published poems, essays and translations with them. He took part in the Greek Civil War and then went to Athens. There appeared some of his poems in the art magazine O Eonas Mas , and he published the poetry books Aesthesis (1953) and Efimerida (1955).

In 1954 he married and went to Paris with his wife to study directing at the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques . In 1956 he returned to Athens and made fourteen feature films there until 1966. In 1992 he was awarded the Prix ​​Aristeion for his translation of James Joyce's Ulysses for significant contributions to contemporary literature and exemplary translation of contemporary literature. Kapaskis is the father of the film producer Gabriella Kapsaski and the uncle of the director Spyros Kapsaskis as well as the grandfather of the director Selene Kapsaski and the actress Rahel Kapsaski .
