Location of the Ermida de Santa Catarina de Monsaraz in Portugal.

The late Romanesque chapel of Santa Catarina de Monsaraz (in Portuguese: Ermida de Santa Catarina de Monsaraz ) is located around 800 meters east of Monsaraz above the Albufeira de Alqueva reservoir, not far from the border with Spain . Monsaraz belongs to the municipality of the same name ( Freguesia ) Monsaraz in the district ( Concelho ) Reguengos de Monsaraz in the Évora district , in southeastern Portugal .

history

The founding of the chapel in the 13th century is associated with the Knights Templar , later the Order of Christ , which was strongly represented in the region at that time. Due to the lack of written sources so far, the final proof is still pending and the further history of the chapel remains in the dark.

In 1971 the chapel was registered as a Monumento Nacional and placed under protection; four years later, the heavily damaged building underwent a thorough restoration. Further restoration work was carried out in 1981 and 1985.

architecture

Santa Catarina de Monsaraz.

The chapel consists of two separate parts of the building. The hexagonal apse made of granite masonry dates from the 13th century . The crenellated crowning , which gives the building a tower-like appearance, was only added in the 14th or 15th century. The apse has a diameter of 5.3 meters and shows a rectangular window in the upper third of the wall on each side. The pointed oval roof is accessible via an internal stair tower in the southwest. A circumferential tooth frieze below the roof and several semi-arches structure the interior.

To the west is the simple, single-nave chapel built in the 16th century, which is only illuminated through a single round window above the simple portal.

Both parts of the building are connected by the portal of the apse - a semi-arch that rests on prismatic columns.
