Necarne Castle ( Irish Na Cairn , formerly Castle Irvine ; Caisleán an Irbhinigh ) is a castle in the townland Castle Irvine Demesne near the city of Irvinestown in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland . It is just a few miles from Lough Erne .

history

Edward Warde was one of the first builders in the Irvinestown countryside in 1610 at the time of the colonization of Ulster. Such builders then undertook the construction of a house and a bawn ( curtain wall ) on the land that the British administration left them, and only took British tenants (24 men per 4 km²) to provide the sovereigns with a number of armed men . Ward's patent was issued May 13, 1611. At that time the land was called Nakarney or Nakarna . The land changed hands a few times until Gerard Lowther acquired it in 1615.

Major George Marcus Irvine , born November 26, 1760 at Castle Irvine, married Elizabeth d'Arcy on March 31, 1788 . She was the daughter of Judge d'Arcy Irvien of Dummow Castle , County Meath . The d'Arcy Irviens from Dummow Castle were descendants of the Barons d'Arcy. Charles Cockburn d'Arcy Irvien eventually sold Necarne Castle.

Later Necarne Castle belonged to the Kennedy family . During the Second World War , the castle was used as a British and American army hospital. A small cemetery for members of the Royal Air Force who died in the Battle of the Atlantic was also built during this period .

Today there is a riding stable on the site.

Legend

There has always been speculation about the origin of the name Necarne . Legend has it that Hugh Roe O'Donnell , an Irish chief, was on one of his marches to discipline the O'Briens , who were cooperating with the English. Then he noticed a fortress on his left flank and ordered his men to scout it. They came back and said "Ni carn e" (Eng .: There is no building there). This is how the name Necarne came about.
