Michael McGovern (Bishop)

Michael George McGovern (born July 1, 1964 in Chicago ) is an American clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Belleville .

Life

Michael McGovern attended Christ the King School in Chicago and Saint Ignatius College . In 1986 he earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Loyola University Chicago . From 1988 to 1990 studied McGovern at the DePaul University in Chicago jurisprudence . After studying Catholic theology at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein , he received the sacrament of ordination on May 21, 1994 at Holy Name Cathedral from the Archbishop of Chicago , Cardinal Joseph Bernardin .

After his ordination, Michael McGovern first worked as parish vicar to the Queen of the Universe Parish in Chicago, before he was parish vicar of Saint Mary Parish in Lake Forest from 1998 to 1999 . In 1999, McGovern became Associate Diocesan Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Chicago and, in 1999, Vice Diocesan Chancellor. From 2000 to 2002 he was the archbishop's delegate for foreign priests . Michael McGovern then served as a parish vicar in the Saint Juliana Parish in Chicago for a year . From 2004 to 2016 he was pastor of Saint Mary Parish in Lake Forest before becoming pastor of Saint Raphael the Archangel Parish in Old Mill Creek . Since 2007 McGovern has also been Dean of Deanery A of Vicariate I and since 2020 Episcopal Vicar ad interim of Vicariate I. Michael McGovern has also been a member of the Council of Priests since 2001 and a member of the College of Consultors of the Archdiocese of Chicago since 2009 .

On April 3, 2020, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Belleville. The archbishop of Chicago, bladder Cardinal Joseph Cupich , donated to him on 22 July of the same year in the Cathedral of St. Peter in Belleville , the episcopal ordination ; Co- consecrators were Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Chicago, George Rassas , and Bishop Emeritus of Belleville, Edward Kenneth Braxton .
