John Charles Wester

John Charles Wester (born November 5, 1950 in San Francisco ) is an American clergyman and Archbishop of Santa Fe .

Life

John Charles Wester studied at Saint Joseph College Seminary in Mountain View and Saint Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park . He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on May 15, 1976 .

After his ordination he was first chaplain in San Rafael . From 1979 to 1986 he was a teacher, chaplain and headmaster at Marin Catholic High School in Kentfield . He then worked for two years in the school supervision of the higher Catholic schools in the archdiocese. Archbishop John Raphael Quinn made him his personal secretary and ceremonial officer in 1988 . From 1993 to 1997 he was pastor in San Francisco and then in charge of the clergy .

He graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Masters Degree in Spiritual Theology in 1984 and another Masters Degree in Pastoral Care from Holy Names College in Oakland in 1993 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of San Francisco and titular bishop of Lamiggiga on June 30, 1998 . The Archbishop of San Francisco, William Joseph Levada , donated him episcopal ordination on September 18 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the retired Archbishop of San Francisco, John Raphael Quinn , and the coadjutor of the Diocese of San Jose in California , Patrick Joseph McGrath . As auxiliary bishop, he was vicar general and, during the vacancy from August 2005 to February 2006, apostolic administrator of the Archdiocese of San Francisco.

On January 8, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as Bishop of Salt Lake City , on March 14, 2007 the enthronement took place.

Pope Francis appointed him Archbishop of Santa Fe on April 27, 2015 . The inauguration took place on June 4th of the same year.

At the United States Bishops' Conference , he chairs the communications committee and serves on the administrative and migration committees.

John Charles Wester is Grand Officer of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem .
