John Joseph Keane

John Joseph Keane (born September 12, 1839 in Killbarn , Ireland , † June 22, 1918 in Dubuque (Iowa) ) was an Irish-American clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dubuque .

Life

John Joseph Keane received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Baltimore on July 2, 1866 .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him Bishop of Richmond on March 26, 1878 . He received episcopal ordination on August 25 of the same year through his predecessor in Richmond, the Archbishop of Baltimore , James Gibbons . Co- consecrators were Bishop of Wheeling , John Joseph Kain , and Coadjutor Bishop of Chicago , Thomas Patrick Roger Foley .

On August 12, 1888, he renounced the Richmond diocese and was appointed titular bishop of Iasus two days later . On January 29, 1897 he was appointed titular archbishop of Damascus .

Pope Leo XIII. finally appointed him on July 24, 1900 Archbishop of Dubuque . From this office he resigned on April 28, 1911 and was appointed titular archbishop of Cius .

Since 1889 he was an elected member of the American Philosophical Society .
