Augustine Van de Vyver

Augustine Van de Vyver (born December 1, 1844 in Haasdonk , Belgium , † October 16, 1911 in Richmond , Virginia , USA ) was Bishop of Richmond .

Life

Augustine Van de Vyver studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the American College of the Immaculate Conception in Leuven from 1867 to 1870 . He received the sacrament of ordination for the Diocese of Richmond on July 24, 1870 .

Van de Vyver then became a curate at St. Peter's Cathedral in Richmond. From 1875 to 1881 he was a pastor in Harpers Ferry , West Virginia . In 1881 Augustine Van de Vyver became pastor of St. Peter's Cathedral and vicar general of the Diocese of Richmond.

On July 16, 1889, Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the Bishop of Richmond. The Archbishop of Baltimore , James Gibbons , ordained him episcopal on October 20 of that year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Wheeling , John Joseph Kain , and the Vicar Apostolic of North Carolina , Leo Michael Haid, OSB .

His grave is in the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Richmond.
