Denis Joseph O'Connell

Denis Joseph O'Connell (born January 24, 1849 in Donoughmore , County Cork , Ireland , † January 1, 1927 in Richmond , Virginia , USA ) was Bishop of Richmond .

Life

Denis Joseph O'Connell studied Philosophy and Catholic Theology at the Pontifical North America College in Rome . He received the sacrament of ordination for the diocese of Richmond on May 26, 1877 .

O'Connell was then James Gibbons' private secretary . From 1885 to 1895 Denis Joseph O'Connell was Rector of the Pontifical North America College in Rome. He was then the third rector of the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC from 1903 to 1909 .

On December 16, 1907 appointed him Pope Pius X to the titular bishop of Sebaste in Phrygia . The Archbishop of Baltimore , James Cardinal Gibbons, donated him episcopal ordination on May 3, 1908 ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Cincinnati , Henry Moeller , and the Bishop of Charleston , Henry Pinckney Northrop . On December 24, 1908, Pius X appointed him auxiliary bishop in San Francisco .

On January 19, 1912, Pius X appointed him Bishop of Richmond. The inauguration took place on March 19 of the same year. Denis Joseph O'Connell resigned as Bishop of Richmond on January 15, 1926. Then Pope Pius XI appointed him . as titular bishop of Mariamme .

The Bishop Denis J. O'Connell High School in Arlington is named after him.
