John Clayton Nienstedt (born March 18, 1947 in Detroit ) is retired Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis .

Life

John Clayton Nienstedt was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Detroit on July 27, 1974 . Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop in Detroit and titular bishop of Alton on June 12, 1996 . The Archbishop of Detroit, Adam Joseph Cardinal Maida , donated him episcopal ordination on July 9, 1996 ; Co- consecrators were James Aloysius Cardinal Hickey , the Archbishop of Washington , and Edmund Casimir Cardinal Szoka .

On June 12, 2001 Nienstedt was appointed bishop of New Ulm , where the inauguration took place on August 6, 2001. On April 24, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis , where he succeeded Harry J. Flynn as Archbishop on May 2, 2008 .

After the archbishopric was considering bankruptcy in November 2014 to meet claims for damages from victims of abuse , the resignation requests according to Canon 401 § 2 CIC (illness or other serious reasons) of the archbishop as well as the auxiliary bishop and vicar general Lee Anthony Piché were accepted by Pope Francis on June 15 Adopted in 2015.
