Adam Joseph Maida
Adam Joseph Cardinal Maida (born March 18, 1930 in East Vandergrift , USA ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Detroit .
Life
Maida, son of a Polish immigrant family, studied in Orchard Lake from 1948 , in Latrobe and Baltimore from 1950 and obtained a licentiate in Catholic theology . On May 26, 1956, he received the sacrament of ordination in Pittsburgh and then worked in the pastoral care of his home diocese. After further studies he laid at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome , the licentiate in professional Canon Law from 1964 he was in the Department of Civil Law at the Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh doctorate .
In the following 20 years he held various leadership roles in the administration of the Diocese of Pittsburgh and a professorship in theology at La Roche College. In addition, he wrote numerous essays and contributed to a court newspaper.
On May 25, 1984, Pope John Paul II named him Bishop of Green Bay . He received the episcopal ordination on January 25, 1984 by the Pro-Nuncio in the USA and later Cardinal Pio Laghi ; Co-consecrators were his predecessor in Green Bay, Aloysius John Wycislo , and his former diocesan bishop Vincent Martin Leonard from Pittsburgh .
On May 7, 1990, Maida was named Archbishop of Detroit. On November 26, 1994, John Paul II accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio in the college of cardinals . On July 14, 2000, he was also given responsibility for the Mission sui juris of the Cayman Islands as Apostolic Superior . After the death of John Paul II, Cardinal Maida attended the 2005 conclave .
On January 5, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. Maida's resignation request submitted for reasons of age. At the 2013 conclave after the resignation of Benedict XVI. he did not take part as a cardinal over 80 years old.
